Sustainability Health/Science Project
Grand Prismatic Spring Yellowstone National Park Source: http://yellowstone.net/ (left) Hurricane Katrine 2005 (right)
This project will be based on the film HOME by Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Read the research project description below. Watch the film! Listen closely, take notes, be observant, revisit topics of interest.

Reaction Paper:Make a list of 5 possible research topics from the film. These should be an issue, place, group of people, or a phenomenon that you could explore to find out more. Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of each. Write this in a google document or word document and share with [email protected].
Research project:
Using the content from your reaction paper, have a conference (in person, phone or via email) with Joe to decide on 1 topic for your research project.
Research and Create a presentation on google drive with at least 8 slides. Share the google presentation with [email protected]. Your presentation should explain the topic you selected and answer the following questions:
1. Where is this issue taking place?
2. Who is involved? (groups of people AND other species)
3. What are the impacts to the local ecosystem and the global ecosystem?
4. What is the timeline of relevant events?
5. Are there ways to make this issue less harmful/more sustainable? (Such as alternatives/new technologies)
6. What are the impacts on human health?
TO DO: Be sure to include pictures of your topic and related issues, statistics, descriptions and explanations that give others clear insight into your topic. Please cite the sources you used in your research in APA format in a slide at the end of the presentation. Images must also be cited in your presentation- copy and paste the websites from which you obtain images in a caption below the image.
Final Assessment:
You will be graded on:
- Quality of information (explaining your topic clearly)
- Answering all of the questions (1-6 above)
- Citing your sources (no citation = plagiarize-ation) use APA format.

Presentation Assessment
Use this key:
[5 = Mastery of the Skill/Content] [4 = Well Done] [3 = OK, but room for improvement] [2 = Needs Some Work]
[1 = Unclear/Confused]
1. Presenter’s Name and topic
2. What crucial/new information was presented? What are the problems, solutions, and/or impacts on human health?
3. Was the information presented clearly?
5 4 3 2 1 Give an example to support your answer.
4. Was the presenter well informed on the topic/Did the presenter show that they had researched the topic? 5 4 3 2 1 Give an example.
5. Did the presenter speak to the audience in a clear manner/Was the information presented in a way that you could understand?
5 4 3 2 1 Give an example.
6. What questions emerged? What further research is needed on this topic?

How to write a good quiz:
1. Questions should highlight the most important points that were covered in your presentation.
2. Focus on the Environmental Justice components- how does this issue impact people of color, poor people, and people who are disconnected from the power structure disproportionately.
3. The answers to the questions were clearly presented in the presentation.
4. The vocabulary/language in the questions is consistent with the vocabulary/language in the presentation.
5. Write the questions and the answers in a google doc and share it the teacher.

Directions:
Using the guidelines on the following pages, you will conduct research on your topic with the goal of sharing your knowledge with others. Work in partners or solo to design an educational poster or presentation. Then share what you have learned.
Poster or presentation (power point or google presentation or presi) which includes:
Research sites from the National Institutes of Health, a federal agency.
a. National Institutes of Health/National Library of Medicine sites: http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/ This site has advanced information on the physical properties and toxicity of 370,000 chemicals.
b. http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/enviro.html This sit is more specifically focused on environmental health and toxicology. There are links to toxins, databases, and other research tools.
c. http://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov/ A site specifically for students.
d. http://toxmap.nlm.nih.gov/toxmap/main/index.jsp
Note: wikipedia should NOT be your only source of information
e. https://multcolib.org/resource/academic-search-premier Multnomah County Library academic research access
Vocabulary review: Here are key terms you will encounter during your research:
Exposure pathway: The way a toxin enters your body; in other words, the ‘path’ the toxin takes in order to expose you to it.
Some exposure pathways include: ingestion (eating or drinking) inhalation (breathing in) absorption (exposure through skin) injection (hypodermic transmission)
Dose: an amount of medication (drug) or toxin that is ingested, inhaled, absorbed, or injected
Sensitivity: degree of susceptibility; the ability of an organism to react to stimuli; irritability
